PostSubject: Going Back in Time   Sun Feb 22, 2009 2:14 am

So then, after trying for a year and a half to enjoy Vista. Im finding i cant, it's just pissing me off too much. Random crashs (which im told is due to the fact Vista needs at minimum 1gb of ram and run and so its eating 50% OF MY RAM). As such brought myself a sealed copy of Windows XP for £50 (I dont know if thats cheap or expensive but im prepared to pay) and im looking to move to it from vista. Now my question is two fold:

1) How do i uninstall Vista and then install XP
2) As Vista is install on to HD job and not Disc (I thought this was illegal, remember reading somewhere they have to supply the original vista discs to you at purchase and not simply a "Reboot" disc which installs vista from a hidden partion). That came preinstalled, how do i keep this on my PC just in case i mess up and need to reboot Vista?

Im looking for any techie help on this (in other words Barcodes help tbh)

0) Sounds like an OEM copy so its only legal if you are changing the guts of your machine. Having said that, changing an IDE cable is enough to legalise it. Try not to step on the motherboard this time.
1) Format. You could always use Ghost or DiskImage to take an image of the disk, but that is generally sodding enormous.
2) You should have it on disk. If not, get one off them. You're right in that they are not allowed to sell it without a disk, even if its a recovery disk.

3) Given that your problem is lack of memory why the hell did you not buy another 1gb? It would have been less than £50 even as a 2gb kit.

I've been using 32 bit vista for 18 months with no crashes, 64 bit vista for 6 months, no crashes. I have 2GB in one and 4GB in the other.

Vista uses 504Mb to start up. Getting a vista machine with 1Gb is a waste of time.

Maybe im just unlucky, but it crashs atleast once a week. Just freezes up and i have to restart, This happens no matter what. Ive ran a full AV and Spyware search using AVG+Spybot and Adaware. It even does it following a Reformat i did a few months back, i would much rather just go XP and be happy tbh.

Meh, would much rather just go back to XP as stated and my machine has 2GB Ram. Perhaps its just me and computers.

SP1?

Mind you, it could just be some of the crap you have installed on there or dodgy drivers.
